Unemployment higher
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 21. Registered unemployed in the fortnight to February 14 increased by 318 from 3135 to 3453, said the Minister of Labour (Mr Faulkner) today. However, in the following week—to February 21—there was a decrease of 54, he said. To mid-February, there were increases in unemployed the 14 employment districts, the largest being 163 in Auckland and 141 in Palmerston North. Decreases for the fortnight were recorded in seven districts, the highest being 170 in Dunedin/Oamaru and 100 in Gisborne. As well as the unemployed, 227 men (28 at January 31) were employed on special Government department work.
At February 14, 1271
people were receiving unemployment benefit, an increase of 49 since January 31. Figures released for Social Welfare Department districts show the number of men receiving unemployment benefit as Auckland 166 (118), Hamilton 33 (23), Wellington 29 (26), Christchurch 59 (70) and Dunedin/Oamaru 9 (13). The figures in parenthesis are the numbers at January 31, 1975. Mr Faulkner said he expected shortly to announce measures to provide special work for the unemployed.
