Tennis assn replies
The chairman of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s management committee (Mr R. B. Brown) has denied that the body blamed the N.Z.L.T.A. for the clash of dates in the Commercial Union grand prix tournaments in Christchurch and Melbourne last year. A Press Association message from Wellington said that Canterbury had made the charge in a letter to the national association. Mr Brown said the letter had not contained any criticism of the clash in dates.
"What we did say was that after the tournament in Christchurch we understood that if the prize money was increased to $50,000 for 1975 there would not be a clash,” he said. “We are upset that, having said we would raise the money to $50,000, we still got a clash — in this case, with Perth.”
The Canterbury association wondered whether the Australian advocate had pushed the case for Christchurch hard enough when the Asian circuit dates were decided.
