Watson seeks N.Z. title
The Commonwealth Games 10,000 metres rep- ' resentative. Philip Watson, ■ does not intend to let his [ exclusion from the , New Zealand cross-coun-try team for the world championships at Morocco next month interfere with his athletic ambitions. Watson (Methodist), excluded from the team when he refused to compete on a Sunday in the Spanish championships, is now concentrating on winning a New Zealand title in the 10,000 metres at the national championships at Dunedin on February 28. Watson has no regrets on his stand on Sunday running.
“I’d love to win the national 10,000 metres title and I am looknig forward very much to the championships," he said. But even w’ith his main rival Richard Tayler, out of the way, he is not taking the event lightly. He considers that Ron Moir, of Auckland will be his strongest opponent.
If Watson succeeds in winning the title, the absence of some leading distance athletes will detract little from his victory.
