Master mariners elect officers

Captain J. Twomey was elected warden of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Company of Master Mariners at its annual meeting this week.

Captain Twomey, who spent the bulk of his seafaring career with the Ellerman City Line, is now secretary of the Lyttelton branch of the New Zealand Port Employers’ Association. Captain R. M. Henshaw, a former Port Line master, who is today Blue Star Port Lines operations manager in Christchurch, was elected deputy warden. The past warden is Captain G. B. Broom, who spent his seafaring career with Shaw, Savill, and Albion, Ltd. Other officers elected are:

Secretary, Captain F. R. Keer-Keer; treasurer, Captain W. A. Siddall; executive council, Captains R. D. H. Wallace and A. P. Gale. Committee members elected were Captains P. T. Rea, H. D. Cox, G. C. Simpson, A. K. Mobbs, M, J. Stammer, J. E. Kemp, and H. J. Gordon. A vast area of maritime experience, afloat and ashore, is reflected in the list above, to cope with today’s changing pattern. Planning is now well (under way for the New ZeaI land-Europe container serI vices to be run from 1977 ! by four Continental shipping lines. The latest development is the building up of a team of container experts in New Zealand to co-ordinate the various working and study groups here. Mr J. H. Meyer, a spokesman for the Continental lines, said that the New Zealand team would soon be strengthened by-the secondment by Hapag Lloyd, of Germany, of Mr A. Smith, of Sydney. Mr Smith comes from the Seabridge organisation, agent for the four-partner Continental lines operating to Australia. The Nedlloyd representative will be Mr T. van Langeveld, who has been with this Dutch line in New Zealand for six years. I A representative of ' France’s Messageries Maritimes, will join the team soon. He will come from the container port of Zeebrugge. The appointment of a representative of the Italian partner, Lloyd Triestino, will complete the initial working group. The four lines are partners in the Australia-Europe
