New Zealand was the second largest importer of American bourbon whisky in the world, the executive vice-president of the largest United States bourbon distilling firm (Mr M. Lewin) said in Christchurch yesterday. Per capita, New Zealand was also the biggest consumer of the whisky.
The James B. Beam Distilling Company was founded in 1795, and now had an annual production wotth SUSI6Sm, with a store of nearly one million barrels available at any time. This whisky was distilled at a 1500 acre property in Kentucky.
Mr Lewin said that visiting American servicemen had helped to stir local interest in bourbon whisky.
“It’s perhaps tjo coincidence that West Germany, where we also have many servicemen, is also a major importer of' our whisky,” he said.
