Honour for N.Z. professor
Professor I. A. Gordon, who was on the staff of the Victoria University of Wellington for 37 years, will be awarded an honorary doctorate of the University of Stirling in June.
Professor Gordon joined Victoria as head of the English Department in 1936, and * retired last year. i
He came to the university from the University of Edinburgh. While at Victoria, his positions included Dean of the faculty of Arts, and chairman of the English Language Institute. He was a member of the University grants committee, a member of the executive council of the Association of Universities of the British Commonwealth, and from 1947 to 1952 he was Vice-Chancellor of the University of New ; Zealand.
Professor Gordon held visiting professorships at three overseas universities, and is now visiting fellow in the department of advanced studies in the humanities at Edinburgh. He also holds a teaching fellowship at Leeds University. He has written many, books, the latest on Katherine Mansfield. Professor Gordon was bom in Edinburgh, but he holds a New Zealand passport, and hopes to be back in Wellington in July.
