More out of work in U.K.
i (N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) LONDON, Feb. 21. Unemployment in Britain rose 790,892 this month — the highest since January, 1973 — the British Government has announced. This was 14,000 higher than the estimated figure for last month, and an increase of 137,000 since November, when the last official figures were tabulated, the Employment Ministry said. The unemployment total represents 3.4 per cent of Britain’s 23.3 m workers.
The highest out-of-work percentage was reported in battle-scarred Northern Ireland, where there was a slight rise in the unemployed to 34,691 or 6.8 per cent of the half-million working population. The figures were below forecasts that unemployment would reach 800,000, but were still the highest since January, 1973. Then, there were 823,800 (3.5 per cent) out of work in a similarsized work force.
