Sir, —Miss Axcell’s letter misses important points. Free communication between patients and doctors on sensitive matters such as family relationships, and sexual difficulties is essential for effective patient care. This is especially so in psychiatry because prejudice about mental health problems still exists. For this reason psychiatric records are not ; freely available to all hospital staff. It is regrettable ■that an effect of current police activity is erosion of the level of confidence which previously existed between patients and doctors. JOHN DOBSON, , N.Z. Committee, Australian , and N.Z. College of i Psychiatrists. ■ February 1975.
