A&P i- W SHOW See uou Growth of fishing Over the last 10 years the fishing industry in Kaikoura has steadily grown. Twentyfour fishing boats use the north and south wharf anchorages and there are many more open fishing dinghies working from sheltered channels and bays along the rocky coastline. Three fish processing factories service the catches of wet fish, paua and crayfish, both the latter being processed mainly for export, with a small quantity going to the tourist hotels throughout New Zealand. This expansion of the fishing industry has created work for the community and together with the increase in road and rail traffic, has resulted in a steady growth in the township with new subdivisions and the building of more houses. At the end of 1973 the Marlborough Harbour Board was granted control of the Kaikoura coast shoreline, and since then has made many improvements to the wharves and other harbour facilities. A new small craft launching ramp has been built at Moa Point. South Bay, to cater for the increasing number of holiday boat owners who frequent Kaikoura’s coastal waters, and further improvements are planned for the future when time and finances permit. ■
