Power guarantee sought
If the council decided to create clean air zones, adequate provision would have to be made for alternative heating in an emergency, said Cr I. Calvert, at a meeting of the Waimairi County Council last evening. At his suggestion, the council decided to ask the Minister of Electricity (Mr Bailey) for an assurance on the maintenance of electricity supplies, and to ask the Minister of Health (Mr McGuigan) what type of heating and fuel he would permit to be used tin an energy crisis. Unless the council received i clear and concise answers! from the. ministers, it could
not introduce the zones, said the chairman (Mr D. B. Rich).
The County Engineer (Mr A. J. W. Lamb) said that water-heating in a clean air zone would have to be by an approved method. Cr Calvert said the Government should be asked to investigate the establishment of a smokeless fuel industry, so that people could still have open fires. Cr L. J. E. Franks said that Christchurch should be assured of a greater supply of electricity in a crisis because of its air pollution problem.
