ADDINGTON MARKET Store stock values rise again

Store stock continued to draw a strong demand from large galleries of buyers at the Addington market yesterday, and values for lambs and some of the breeding ewes were stronger.

Store lambs had a buoyant sale, the top pens in a number of lines approaching $7 a head. Two-looth ewes had a firmer I sale, in spite of a much larger yarding, and in the adult sheep section ewes with good mouths also improved on recent good rates. I The store sheep yarding was '30.010, compared with 30,135 last week, and it consisted of 5785 wether lambs, 1325 ewe lambs. 7600 two-tooth ewes, and 15,300 adult sheep. Store lambs Store lambs had another very good sale, values rising again on recent good rates. The yarding of a few more than 7000 head was 5000 fewer than last week, and with another large gallery following the sale it proved to be short of farmers’ requirements. The strong buying pressure lifted values a further 30c to 40c a head, particularly on the medium class of lamb. This week’s yarding drew a sizeable entry of Romney and Romney cross lambs from the West Coast and Kaikoura, with another fair entry of Corriedales and halfbreds. The market was excellent for vendors. Most of the top draftings reached $6, and a number of the top pens approached $7. Very few lambs changed hands at less than $5. Those that did were very small indeed. The Romney-cross lambs from the Coast sold briskly throughout. and the top drafting from a Lands and Survey block sold at $7.30. The top selection of Corriedales and halfbreds sold regularly at more than $6.50. and a range of $5.60 to $6.30 covered a large proportion of the remainder.

Ewe-lamb values followed the season’s pattern, the best pens selling at a premium over wether

i lambs, and others selling in line with wether lamb rates. i A feature of the section was the sale of some woolly BorderCorriedales at $8.90. They were bigger than some of the twotooth ewes, and obviously a mat ing proposition this season. Romney ewe lambs sold to $7. and Corriedales to $7.20. For the remainder, values ranged from $5 to $6.50, according to size and quality. For all of them, it was a very strong market. Sales of store lambs included:— Wethers: Estate T. W. Bamford (Hurunui). 41 Corriedalcs at $4.70 to $6.60; B. J. Frazer (Maruia). 292 Romneys at $4.70 to $6; H. A. J. Ward (Oxford), 28 at $7.25; J. Lundy (Okuku). 128 Romneys at $6.60; A. F. and M. J. Although there was a wide range of quality, there was a good selection of fine-wooled ewes, well grown and even in the wool. The selection of Romneys was also a little better, although there was not a lot of them.

The market opened with values firm on those of the last sale, but with a big gallery following there was a noticeable lift, and over all a good many two-tooths improved 70c to 80c. The best of the Corriedales and halfbreds sold to $12.60. and several other top pens bettered $l2. Better-than-average finewoolled ewes ranged from $10.50 to $11.30, with medium at $9.50 to $10.20. and others at $8 to $9. Romneys sold to $12.50 for the top drafting of an annual line from a Banks Peninsula vendor. Others sold mainly at $0.50 to $ll.

Adult sheep Adult breeding ewes had another very good sale. The yarding of more than 15,000 head was 3300 more than last week. The sale drew a sizeable number of fine-woolied ewes from the Kaikoura and East Coast districts, and there was a larger offering of Romneys. However, while most of the ewes reflected a very favourable season, many of them were poor in the mouth. In spite of the larger yarding, many buyers in search of ew’es with good mouths left the yards I empty-handed. The market was at all stages I fully firm on last week’s rates, j and the annual lines of ewes' with sound mouths improved by a steady 50c a head. The best of the fine-woolled ewes — some four-year-olds — : reached $8.60, and there were frequent sales of good ewes at $7 to $7.50. Useful sound-mouthed ewes, which might see out two seasons, regularly reached $6.50, and oneyear ewes sold steadily at $5 to $6, with aged down to $4. Romneys met a particularly. good demand, a feature being I the sale of the top drafting from | a Lands and Survey block on the

West Coast at $9 10. They had good chisel-mouths, and were carrying a good growth of wool. The" best ot the ewes from the Peninsula reached $7.60, others selling at 53.80 to $6.80.
