Hearings on gun control

(N.Z.P.A.Reuter—Copyright)

WASHINGTON, Feb. 19.

Congress has begun considering whether to restrict the use of guns, the most frequently used weapon in major crime in the United States.

Mr John Conyers, chairman of the House of Representatives judiciary sub-com-mittee on crime, which opened hearings on the subject yesterday said crime statistics showed the compelling need to strengthen Federal gun control laws.

The National Commission on Causes and Prevention of Violence in 1969 estimate there were 90 million firearms in the United States.

Federal Bureau of Investigation statistics showed i that firearms were responsible for 11,249 deaths in 1973. The handgun, which is the prime target for proposed gun control legislation, was responsible for 53 per cent of these deaths, Mr Conyers said.
