TV channels co-operate
(N.Z.P.A.Reuter —Copwrifjht)
LONDON, Feb. 19. Secret meetings have been going on between the 8.8. C. and Independent Television to save money, Mr Brian Young, director-general of the Independent Broadcasting Authority, has revealed. The two channels were hoping to alternate their coverage of certain events, particularly sporting ones, he said.
If talks were successful it could only benefit the viewer, he said at a meeting of the Broadcasting Press Guild in London.
For a long time I.T.V. had wanted to share some top programmes with the 8.8. C. but the corporation had always maintained that it must compete with the commercial network—as in coverage of last year’s World Cup.
Mr Young said: “We know that on many occasions competition benefits the viewers but there comes a time when it should give way to co-operation in many instances.”
