A slimmer, trimmer Chief Inspector Barlow is back on 8.8. C. television this week in a new eight-part series of “Barlow.”

Actor Stratford Johns, who formerly played Barlow in “Z Cars,” “Softly. Softly” and “Barlow at Large,” has whittled his size down from fifteen stone to a mere twelve. And it was hard work, not dieting that did it, (he maintains.

While making the present (series, the 50-year-old actor (has been on stage six nights (a week in the West End (play “Who Saw Sim Die?” Seven episodes of Barlow (were recorded in two (months and a half, a speed (described by Johns as ‘’horrific.” • “When I wasn’t working, 'it was sleeping,” he said ' to “Who Saw Him Die?” in which Johns plays the part of another police character, Chief Inspector Pratt, finishes here in mid-January. In February, the cast of the play will accompany Johns to New Zealand for a 10-week tour of “Who Saw Him Die?” due to start in March. Performances will be given in Auckland. Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Johns will afterwards tour Australia in the play.
