FORECASTS TOO HIGH

(N.Z. Press Association) WAIPUKURAU, Jan. 13. Forecasts that prices at the first ewe fair of the season in Hawke’s Bay would be about half last year’s rates were optimistic. At the Waipukurau fair today, top lines in the entry of about 30,000 crossbred two-tooth ewes were back $2O. and medium lines were $l2 to $l5 easier. Border Leicester cross ewes sold to $11.75. Perendales to $9.50, and Coopworths to $6.75.

Last year's crossbreds made to $35.50, and Perendales to $24.40. The Waipukurau ewe fairs are among the biggest in New Zealand and serve as a pointer to the market. “You’ll find cheaper prices coming to light in other parts of the country,” one stock agent said. One prominent buyer said that in view of the state of the economy, today’s prices were “more realistic.”
