Replicas for museum
The Canterbury Museum’s Antarctic wing is likely to feature replicas of some of the equipment used by the Norwegian explorer, Roald Amundsen, said the director of the Norwegian Polar Research Institute (Dr T. Gjelsvik) in Christchurch yesterday.
Dr Gjelsvik said the director of the Canterbury Museum (Dr R. Duff) visited Oslo last year and after discussions with him Dr Gjelsvik said he hoped the institute would be able to provide some material.
The Norwegian scientist was in Christchurch yesterday after having attended the opening last week of the new s6m Amundsen-Scott station at the South Pole. While at the Pole station Dr Gjelsvik presented the American manager of the station (Mr R. Wolak) with a pair of boots of the sort worn by Roald Amundsen, the first man to reach the South Pole, which were specially made for a 8.8. C. film about Captain Robert Falcon Scott and Amundsen.
