State coal up in price

Increases in the prices of South Island State coal have been announced by the Christchurch manager of the State Coal Depot (Mr S. Armstrong). For wholesale customers, the increases will be up to $3.11 a tonne at the mine.

The retail prices at the Christchurch depot will be $2.08 a 60-kilogram bag (an increase of 12c) for Ohai coal, and $1.98c a 60kg bag (19c increase) for Strongman coal.

Mr Armstrong said that the last increase in the price of State coal at the mine was on January 1, 1972. Any subsequent changes in depot prices had been caused by increased handling and delivery costs at the coal yards. “The price increases will

enable a partial recovery of the increased costs of production,” said Mr Armstrong.

“They will also help to retain production from private mines, which have in the last year been forced to increase their price margin above that of the State to stay in business. In the national interest, it is essential that the production of coal from all sources be maintained from the highest level.”
