Woolston beats champion Suburban cricket side

The highlight of the Christchurch senior suburban cricket competition which resumed on Saturday was the performance of Woolston Working Men’s Club in bundling out last season’s champion, Merivale-Papanui, for 115, and then making 195 for four wickets at stumps.

At 108 for three, MerivalePapanui looked set for a big total, but surprisingly the last seven wickets fell for seven runs. N. Davidson (38), J. Forde (36), and G. Bartlett (26) contributed 100 of the total, while for Woolston, N. Sloane with five wickets and D. Quested with three caused the Merivale collapse.

Sloane had a fine double with 61 for Woolston, and D. Turner (35), S. Hands (24) and S. Gibson (51 not out) helped add to the good score. Woolston has two of Its 35 overs left to gain another batting performance point. At Sumner, the home side, after being sent in to bat by Belfast, lost three early wickets, but an unbroken partnership between B. Bucker (57) and O. Southern (59) took the score to 161 for three, enabling a declaration at tea.

M. Roberts took all three Sumner wickets for a meagre 22 runs. Sumner also found the pitch unresponsive to its bowlers, and Belfast had fought to 131 for four at stumps. B. Pearce (42), P. Steere (33), B. Harris (21), and S. Holden (21 not out) all batted sensiblv. B. Twoomey and L. Cook each took two wickets. SLOWER SCORING Scoring in the remaining two matches was much slower. Thanks to M. Eddington (38) and S. Cotton (29). Waltham made 128, and then Eddington with three wickets for 38, completed a good double against Heathcote, the present competition leader, which was 84 for four at stumps. W. Swallow made 33. Sent in to bat at Denton Oval, Hornby started slowly against the economical bowling of B. Davidson, but R. Wilson (68 not out) and J. Fleming (24) helped Hornby to a respectable 162. Davidson and R. Higgs, with tight bowling, each took three Beckenham lost an early wicket, but K. Tucker (24) and C. Attridge (21) were unbeaten at stumps. Results were:—
