Canterbury 10,000 m title retained by Sheddan

(By

ROD DEW)

Although by no means fully extended, the New Zealand Games representative, John Sheddan (Olympic), won the Canterbury 10.000 metres track championship at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday.

He was content to run with the leading bunch for most of the race and did not put pressure on the field until the last three laps. But when he did lift his pace, none of his rivals could stay with him, and he was soon out on his own.

Sheddon won, well clear of his nearest challenger, in|' 30min 11.2 sec. Second, 6sec ■ behind, was Colin Hicks (Toe 1 H). Tony Ellis (New Brighton) finished third, ahead of the more favoured Tony Good (New Brighton), who had made the pace for much of the distance.

Sheddan afterwards expressed satisfaction with his form, “I was advised by a lot of people not to run with the New Zealand Games so close, but the way it went I don’t think it did any harm,” he said. He indicated that it would be full effort over 1500 jnetres in the Dorrie Leslie meeting next Saturday. In the games, Sheddan has been entered for the 5000

metres, and he intends to Concentrate on this race. However, he would also like

to run in the 10,000 metres if he feels up to it. It is over this distance that he will make his bid for Olympic selection in 1976. PACE STRONG Although he kept largely In the background during the running of the race, Sheddan made the pace at the start and finish. He led the field through the first mile in about 4min 40sec “to drop off the stragglers” before easing back into the bunch.

With 22 laps to run, the leading bunch consisted of Hicks, Ellis. Sheddan, Good, Kevin Hamilton (Technical) and Martin Couldwell (High School Old Boys). With 16 laps to go, Couldwell found the pace too strong, and withdrew. Four laps later, Hamilton also dropped out, leaving four to battle out the major placings. Three laps from the end, Sheddan went to the front and had soon established a break. Hicks settled into second place and Ellis into third. That was the way they finished. It was Sheddan’s second successive win in the championship. The Farmers’ “Athlete of the Week” award went to the New Zealand Games hammer thrower, Bernie Harland (Technical). He won the hammer event with a fine throw of 57.70 metres — the best in Canterbury this season. Second was the former Dunedin athlete, Paul Dryden (Technical), with a best distance of 44.38 metres.

COCHRANE SHINES Another athlete to shine was the Games sprinter, Trevor Cochrane (High School Old Boys). He completely shattered the theory that his basic speed might have been blunted by the amount of middle-distance running he has been doing by recording the fastest 200 metres in Canterbury this season —21.8 sec. Cochrane now has the unusual distinction of being the fastest Canterbury runner over 200, 400, and 800 metres, and sharing the fastest time in the 100 metres.

Second to Cochrane in the 200 metres was another Games sprinter. Grant Anderson (Old Boys), who recorded 22sec. In the 60 metres, Cochrane also won wen In 7sec, this time from the New Zealand junior champion. Mark Sutherland (Univer-sity-Shirley). In the feature mile event, a distance rarely held now that metrication has been adopted, the Canadian runner, Brian Rhodes (Universlty-Shlrley), led almost all the way to win in the good time of 4min 6.2 sec. This was the fastest mile run in Canterbury since 1972, and only I.4sec outside the provincial record set by Alan Gilmour in 1971.

Second was Steve Patchett (Marlborough) in 4min 7.7 sec, with Frank Brookes (Technical) third in 4min B.9sec.
