Smooth View makes successful return

An absence from the track for several months worked wonders for the speedy The Smoother-Moss Patches bitch, Smooth View, which returned to racing with an impressive win in the open flat at the Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club’s twilight equalisator meeting on Saturday.

In her latest racing, Smooth View, runner-up in the last New Zealand championship, had been inclined to stop in the home straight after running prominently. But Howard Brown’s white longtail was not to be denied In the main race. From the inside draw, she was In or shared the lead throughout, and came away in the straight to win comfortably by two lengths. Moon Boy had a good run along the rails to take second ahead of Shady Havoc. It was an eye-catching performance by the Canterbury Futurity Stakes winner as she drifted to the rear early and had to sustain a strong run to get near the leaders. Sally Havoc, which had looked the main danger when she loomed alongside Smooth View down the back straight, weakened slightly to fourth, narrowly ahead of Renara and Keen Moss, which was unable to reach the lead.

TIP TOP FALLS The misfortune of the race was the fall suffered by the fancied Tip Top soon after leaving the boxes. She was chopped between Keen Moss and Sally Havoc, and skidded on her quarters for some distance. However, her trainee Bill Kingston, said that she had come to no harm. Two brilliant winning runs by Torque highlighted the limitclass flat races. The light-fawn bitch has not had much success since finishing second to Tip Top in the South Island championship last July. But Torque, which often races too wide, simply burled her opposition for speed and won the first race by seven lengths in the fast time of 25.65ec. She will not be disgraced in open company. Coxswain, which had won in its maiden debut last October but had since failed at Invercargill, appreciated the return to the Marshland Domain track and won the progressive flat for Gordon Kingston. Kingston also produced the winners of two of the three novice flats, Black Foot spreadeagling the field in the second race. Although no match for Torque, Rex Havoc confirmed his good runs at the last meeting to twice finish second in the limit events.

Another large crowd attended the meeting, and it is obvious that twilight meetings are popular with the public. DETAILED RESULTS Philip Morris maiden flat.— Shadowfax (Mrs N.
