Observation pays off
(N.Z. Press Association) LEVIN, Jan. 12.
An off-duty policeman in Levin noticed a pile of men’s trousers in a car parked in Oxford Street at 8 p.m. on Friday. He set in motion a wide police search which resulted in the arrest at Sanson at 9 p.m. of two men who are suspected of the theft of clothing worth $4500 from a shop in Eltham. The policeman, who at the time was not aware of the theft, took the number of the car and told the police station.
The police in Palmerston North, Foxton and New Plymouth were alerted and a police patrol stopped the car at Sanson. The occupants, two New Plymouth men, were later charged.
The clothing was not recovered.
The Levin polfce say that a third man may be involved.
The Eltham shop was broken into and the clothing taken on Thursday night.
