Sunny, dry month

WELLINGTON, Jan. 12.
December, 1974, was one of the sunniest and warmest on record, said the Meteorological Office today.
Most areas had more than their normal hours of sunshine and above-average temperatures for December. For some areas, especially Canterbury, it was the second successive month with very low rainfall. But parts of the Bay of Plenty and Taupo had more than double their normal rain.
Thunderstorms were unusually frequent, especially in the central North Island, and Milton, in South Otago, had flooding at the beginning of the month. A small local tornado on December 8 at Oakura, west of New Plymouth, caused damage, and a severe hailstorm caused serious damage to crops in the Darfield and Hororata districts.
