Phillips is new leader
The Old Collegians batsman, J. G. Phillips, has taken over the lead In the Lion “player of the day” contest being run in the senior cricket competition. Phillips’s second half-cen-tury against Sydenham earned him another award of two points and a total of 11. He is one ahead of P. G. Coman and B. G. Hadlee. K. J. Wadsworth and G. D. V. Pulley have nine, and D. R. Hadlee eight. Players to earn three points on Saturday were P. A. Stubbings (Riccarton), who had two fine innings of 59; M. McK. Burtt, for another destructive spell of bowling for St Albans; C. W. Aldridge, who bowled well for Sydenham; and G. R. Sherlock, a Bumside-West bowler who got his points for batting.
Other scores were.—Two points, Phillips, Pulley (EastShirley), R. J. Hadlee (Old Boys), and R. M. Gearry (Lancaster Park), one point, K. I. Ferries (St Albans), L. D. A. Thom (Riccarton), W. A. Thomson (Sydenham), W. R. Wilson (Lancaster Park). (Senior scores, page 15)
aoxlng. — Victor Galindez (Argentina) won the vacant World Boxing Association version of the light heavyweight title when his opponent, Len Hutchins (United States) failed to come out for the thirteenth round of their 15round contest in Buenos Aires.
Speedway. — Great Britain defeated Australia, 58-50, in the second international speedway test at the Exhibition Ground. Brisbane, to level the seven-test series at one-all. Australia won the first International, 62-45, in Brisbane.
