Paran in defeat to Swede

(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) ADELAIDE. Pm Swede, B. Borg, defeated O. Parun (New Zealand) in a torrid, four-set clash to win the men’s singles title in the South Australian tennis championships yesterday.

Borg lost the third but recovered to win, 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Booming serves and skilful net play featured in Borg’s methodical defeat of his fellow finalist in this week’s Commercial Union Masters tournament.

Borg won the first set by breaking Panin’s serve in the ninth game and holding his own in the next.

The players plugged away game for game in the second set, until a controversial call seemed to unsettle the New Zealander again in the ninth game.

Matching the Swede serve for serve, and managing to control his opponent’s double-handed backhand, Parun was quick to rush to the net and put away some winning shots in the third set. But Borg, tiring in the searing heat, came back to crush his opponent in the fourth. In their semi-finals on Saturday, Parun beat A. Metreveli (Russia), 6-3, 6-4, and Borg defeated C. Dibley (Australia), 6-4, 6-4.
