ALARMING
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 15. A roof-top search for a suspected burglar on a Wellington hotel last night ended in a trip to hospital and 26 stitches in the hand of a policeman, Constable, A. Fitzwater. Constable Fitzwater was on patrol in Abel Smith Street when he noticed several open windows in the Southern Cross Hotel about 2.30 a.m. He climbed on to the roof of the hotel to search
for any other clues, while reinforcements surrounded the hotel. ' But the roof-top search was shortlived — Constable Fitzwater crashed through a false ceiling above the hotel’s lounge bar and dropped 12 feet to the floor. As he fell, he grabbed out and gashed his hand on a strip of steel strapping. He was taken to Wellington Hospital, treated and discharged. The stake-out around the hotel proved fruitless.
