‘No interference by I.W.S.’

fN.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 15.

The International Wool Secretariat had no intention of trying to change New Zealand’s public auction wool marketing method, said the chairman of the I.W.S. (Mr A. C. B. Maiden) at a press conference. “We are a promotional arm of the industry, not a marketing arm. But we must strive to achieve greater predictability and stability of wool prices,” Mr Maiden said. Mr Maiden, who is also chairman of the Australian Wool Corporation, said that South Africa’s moves towards a buy-up of the wool clip by a marketing authority werealong similar lines proposed by the Australian corporation. These marketing moves were planned to assist the I.W.S. in its job, but the moves would not be forced on any other countries. The secretariat had devised

no new or radical steps to lift the depressed wool industry out of the doldrums. The three-day board meeting had reviewed and studied the financial position of the industry in the light of inflation and decided that its tactics and strategies were still sound.
