BRABIN XI ON TOP
A Canterbury Brabin Shield XI had Ashburton Colts struggling for a draw in a game played at the Domain Oval in Ashburton yesterday. The Brabin Shield side hit up a comfortable 185 for eight before it declared, and by stumps Ashburton had only managed 132 for seven. For the Brabin Shield side, R. Banks scored 40, J. Davidson 34, and D. Williams 29. Among the Ashburton batsmen, G. Drummond did well, getting 34, with G. Olerenshaw 27, and K. Williams 12. G. Gillan (two for 15), C. Marks (two for 42), and D. Williams (one for 8)) bowled well. Other Brabin Cup team trial games scores were:— In Christchurch: M. Johnston’s XI 167 (Johnston 50; K. Burley 3/27, A. Nixon 3/48) beat L Gordon’s XI 126 (Gordon 47, R. Cameron 20; G. Brown 2/21, Walker 3/18, Fuller 2/1). At Ohoka: North Canterbury 221/7 dec. (M. Johnston 76, M. Bayliss 52, C. Stanbury 34, J. Catherwood 35; J. P. Langley 3/71, B. D. Ritchie 4/66) drew with Canterbury Brabin XI 200/9 (R. Moore 66, Ritchie 51, C. Cross 26; A. Abbott 4/30, R. Tainul 2/34).
