Water safety week plans
The 1974 Water Safety 1 Week from December 9 to ’ December 15 will be “bigger and better” than the success- i ful campaign last year, ac- < cording to the Minister of i Internal Affairs (Mr May). More than 600,000 school- 1 children will be invited to t take part in next month’s 1 campaign, and they will be i joined by radio, television, i the press, industry and water sports clubs. i For the third year in sue- < cession the Water Safety i Committee has obtained “sub- j stantial” financial assistance i
for the venture from the Todd Motor Group. About 600,000 primary school children will receive a card on which is printed 12 steps to water safety. A bright sticker bearing the words “Ask Me” will be worn by the children, who will invite others to question them on water safety rules. The children will also be invited to make class lists of other steps to water safety, and to draw a map of their praticular area showing , water hazards and danger spots such as rivers, drains, ( sheep dips, etc. The 12 steps listed on the cards with which the children will be issued are: “Leant to swim; swim in safe places; swim with the ; crowd; treat every bathing , place as dangerous until you’ve made sure it isn’t; keep. your eyes on children i when they swim or play near ■ the water; look after young !
children near water hazards; when fishing from rocks keep out of reach of all waves; cover or fence off water hazards around home or farm; look before you dive; check the weather and watch for changes when boating; always wear an approved lifejacket in a boat; learn rescue breathing.
