Disappointed Spaniards

(U.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. An 11-man Spanish trade delegation to New Zealand found frustration in the high import duties imposed on goods from their country. The group represented several automotive parts and accessories industries in Spain. The president of the mission, Mr J. L. Cacho, said he hoped New Zealand would become a new market for the Spanish products. “But it is difficult,” he said.

“Spanish goods pay 55 per cent duty to come into New Zealand. British goods pay only 20 per cent. In general, our prices are rather lower than the British, but with those tariffs its very difficult to compete.” Mission members hoped the New Zealand Government would lower the import duty. Spain bought goods worth about SUS6m a year from New Zealand, said Mr Cacho. New Zealand bought about SUSIm worth of Spanish exports.
