INVERCARGILL, Nov. 15. A Bluff police constable charged with extortion elected trial by jury when he appeared before Mr E. B. Anderson, S.M., in the Invercargill Magistrate’s Court today. Barry Albert Smith, aged 25, did not plead to the charge that on or about August 19, with intent to gain remission of a debt of $59, he threatened to make an accusation of an offence, namely receiving property dishonestly obtained. Mr Anderson granted interim suppression of name for the complainant in the case. Depositions on the charge will be taken before Mr Anderson on December 4. Smith’s bail of $250, with a similar surety, was continued by Mr Anderson. Smith had appeared before a J.P. in Invercargill yesterday afternoon.
