Wheatgrowing
Sir, —There is much news of semi-starvation in the world. It is a disgrace to our anti-agricultural Government that New Zealand is bidding on the world’s wheat market at this moment. We could be self-sufficient. New Zealand could make a great contribution by simply cancelling our overseas orders for wheat, and reducing our bread ration accordingly. We would not suffer too badly. The phrases—“tightening our belts” and “accepting a modest standard of living” would then have some meaning.—Yours, etc., OBSERVER. November 14, 1974.
