Owen 4th in Venice
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) VENICE. A brilliant inward half of 32—five under par—swept Britain’s P. Oosterhuis to victory in the Italian Open golf championship. Oosterhuis had a final round of 70 for a two-under-par total of 249 and a twostroke victory over J. Miller (United States) and D. Hayes (South Africa). Miller went round in 73 and Hayes a 68 —the best round of the championship. Fourth was S. Owen (N.Z.) who beat Oosterhuis in a play-off for the German Open earlier this year. He shot 72 for a total of 252. Owen led half-way through the final round with an outward half of 33 with the help of an eagle 3, but slipped to an inward 39 with a 6 at the eleventh. Oosterhuis started in joint second place and had slipped to three strokes behind Miller and four behind Owen when he turned in 38. But he chipped in from 20 feet to birdie the short twelfth, then holed a 50yd pitch to eagle the thirteenth. Miller stayed ahead with birdies at the thirteenth and fourteenth, but Oosterhuis holed from 12ft at the fifteenth and from off the green at the sixteenth for birdie 3s, and the American dropped strokes at the fifteenth and eighteenth. Chets.—A. Karpov has requested a postponement of the next scheduled chess match against his Russian compatriot, V. Korchnoi, because he is ill. Karpov leads their elimination series. 2-0. Hockey.—The All-Star Asian hockey team beat an Indian XI in an exhibition match in Jullundur, 1-0.
