N.Z. crews to row overseas

(N.Z. Press Association) WANGANUI. New Zealand is likely to have five rowing crews competing at world championships next year and this is expected to cost more than §70,000.

Delegates to the eightyseventh annual meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association, held in Wanganui, gave sanction to the national council to proceed with a number of overseas trips.

A junior eight (under-19) is to compete in the world junior championships, which begin at Montreal on August 10. New Zealand will again be represented by three crews—an eight, a quadruple scull, and either a coxed or coxless four —at the world championships, beginning at Nottingham on August 30. It is also intended that the senior crews undertake preworld championship racing in North America. WOMEN’S CREW New Zealand is also to have a women’s crew competing in the world women’s championships, which open at Nottingham on August 24. In line with established reciprocal tours, New Zealand will send colts crews to Australia in NovemberDecember, 1975. The national selectors have emphasised that in all cases the tours will proceed only on the basis of a necessary standard being evident at the selection trials. NOMINATIONS Nominations will be called immediately for the tours next year and trials will be held at Wanganui in March. Training will begin at Christchurch at the end of May and the crews will leave for overseas toward the end of June. To help raise funds for the tours it is intended to run a national mystery raffle on April 11 and a national raffle during April-May. Other fund-raising schemes are being considered.

Two more trophies will be awarded at future New Zealand championships—a memorial silver and greenstone trophy for the winners of the senior coxless fours, and a rose bowl for the top eightoar club. A group of Auckland businessmen have donated the ' Rolfe Porter Memorial ; Trophy for the senior coxless | fours, and the old inter- ; provincial Hallyburton Johnstone Rose Bowl will in future 'be awarded to the club scorjing most points in all eight- , oar finals at the national (championships.

Added to future national championships—although this does not come into effect until next summer and depends on entries received and the availability of boats—are coxless fours and quadruple sculls. New Zealand contested these two events at the world championships in Switzerland earlier this year. Women rowers will also have a quadruple fours event, plus eight-oar racing. JUNIOR PAIRS Auckland won a case to add junior coxed pairs to the national regatta programme. Wanganui failed in its effort to have certificates awarded to crews who finish second and third. The only national councillor to lose a seat on the association was Mr A. G. Johnson. Mr C. E. Saunders did not seek re-election. The ■new member of the national council is Mr K. A. Ashby.
