A three-year-old girl bom with severe heart defects which left her unable to walk or talk is making what her mother calls a “miracle recovery” since a rare 12-and-a--half hour operation. The operation, believed to be one of the first of its kind in the world, was performed on Michelle Correira by a team led by the heart transplant pioneer, Dr Christiaan Barnard, at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town on August 20. j Michelle was bom with transposed arteries and two holes in her heart. j 5
