Complaint on petitioners
I (N. 7.. Preus Astociationi WELLINGTON. People who petitioned Parliament were expected to appear before a Parliamentary committee to support their claim, or at least file written submissions, said the chairman of the Petitions Committee (Mr G. Christie. Lab, Napier) in Parliament. Mr Christie was commenting on the petition of Mrs H. Raven and 1636 others asking the Government to make an immediate public protest about the denial of democracy in Chile, to end political recognition of Chile until democracy was restored, and to demand immediate release of political prisoners. i This was the second petition this year for which no witness nor submission had jbeen received, said Mr Christie. He considered this discourteous both to the 1636 ! signatories and to the com-’ Imittee. ! The committee recommended that the request about political prisoners (should be referred to the .Government for most favourable consideration, but it had no recommendation on the (other parts of the petition. The House accepted the recommendation.
