‘Smell’ opponent beaten
Labour candidates fared badly in the Christchurch Drainage Board election. Two sitting members lost their seats and only two, both sitting members—one in the city and the other in Paparua—were returned. A surprise defeat was that of Mr J. F. Davidson, who has been the chief spokes- j man for the Labour members: on the board and one of the most vociferous members on the smell problems at Aranui and almost every aspect of the board’s work. Mr P. W. Anderson goes back for a third term as a city Labour representative. Alphabetical order gives him an advantage which was clear three years ago wheni *
he topped the poll after be-: ing one of the quietest and-least-known members. On; Saturday he slipped to sixth : place. The other sitting Labour: :member to lose his seat was; Mr G. W. Lowrie, who has! served one term. Mr R. S. Leach (Labour)] retained his seat representing: the Paparua county, but al bid by his wife in the neigh-: bouring sub-district of Riccarton and the Middleton: riding of Waimairi was unsuccessful. Other women candidates — two Labour and one Citi-1 zens* — did not appeal to; the voters sufficiently to get elected. The provisional return is: City •J. Rvan (G.) .. .. 27.819 H. C.
