Gallagher (Christchurch) reestablished himself as the top powerboat driver in the South Island with a convincing win in the 60-mile Epiglass classic on the Otago harbour on Saturday.; Driving Hi-Jack, powered by; twin 150 h.p. .Mercury outboards,, Gallagher and his crew, S. Rob son, led all the wav and reached speeds of up to 75 miles per hour in the faster stretches of the course. A time of 55min 27sec for the 60-mile course gave the winner an average speed of more than 60 m.p.h. This was Gallagher's third success in the Otago classic, having previously won the event in 1969 and 1970 Hi-Jack finished 48sec ahead of another Christchurch boat, Skope, driven by R Stewart Spooky Mogul (B Washington, Timarui, one of the top three boats on the South Island circuit this season, finished third. 1 a further 2min 3sec behind. |
