Cr Hay pays tribute

The Mayor-elect, Cr H. G. Hay, said yesterday that the success of Citizens’ Association candidates in the election on Saturday was the direct result of a tremendous voluntary effort by many helpers in the organisation.

i “We were determined at this election to have an efficient organisation and to ensure that our political supporters got out to vote. This ; we undoubtedly achieved, thanks to many months of thorough planning,” he said. | The association’s success was due particularly to the leadership of its chairman, Mr M. O. Holdsworth, and the work of its secretary, Mr ;N. K. Fraser, said Cr Hay. ! “It is certainly gratifying ifor us to have enjoyed such success in such a heavy poll, (which in the past has generally tended to favour Labour .candidates, I think that our ! policy emphasis on lessening party politics in Christchurch local body affairs obviously had a wide appeal for voters of all political allegiances,” he said. ! “I wish to take this opportunity of paying tribute to the outstanding public service of the Mayor (Mr N. G. Pickering) during his eventful term of office. “There is no doubt that he gave unsparingly of his energies in the interests of the progress of Christchurch and his personal contribution to the success of the Gommon- ! wealth Games will be long remembered,” said Cr Hay. “I also acknowledge the dedicated service of the (Mayoress, Mrs Pickering, (whose very active involvement in the interests of
