Container port
Sir, — I am surprised at some Labour candidates for the Harbour Board who claim that they will do all they can to ensure that Lyttelton is designated as a container port. If they really meant what they said, I suggest that a hard word in the ear of the local- M.P. would be a good start. So far he has failed to give support openly to the calling of tenders for the container crane. And now that he no longer holds the Railways portfolio, the conflict of interest over coastal freight no longer exists. More real-
istic rail freight rates may yet save the last vestiges of coastal shipping, and the veteran Labour candidates may at last prove their worth. — Yours, etc., BE CONSISTENT. September 30, 1974.
