Diphtheria increases
(N.Z. Press .Association) HAMILTON. Two more Waharoa people have been confirmed as diphtheria carriers. The medical officer of Health for the Hamilton Health District (Dr E. H. Gordon) confirmed. He said that one of the carriers was an adult from Waharoa pa, the other was a child in the town. “The child is from a family that has given us some trouble,” he added. “We had swabbed the family previously, and the child’s test was negative. But another swab today has proved positive.” Health Department authorities are concerned that some Maori families are defying its request not to visit friends in infected areas. Their refusal has resulted in carriers showing up in Ngaruawahia and Frankton. Dr Gordon said that there had been no new cases or carriers detected in other areas, and he was hopeful that the outbreak was now waning.
