School reading advisers meet
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. A national conference of trading advisers has recommended that teachers’ colleges put more emphasis on the teaching of reading. The advisers believe that there should be more courses for teachers so that they can identify reading problems in children’s first year at school. “Until recently, teachers just fired ahead and taught reading until they struck problems,” said the organiser of the conference, Mr J. K. Millar, the Department of Education curriculum officer for English and reading.
