Reinforcements for 2nd day at Wingatui
Royal Dell and Stillwater, winners for Canterbury stables at Wingatui last Saturday, will have strong reinforcements from the province for the second day of the Otago Racing Club spring meeting. Trinity, the Dunedin Guineas third, and Wigs, a last-start winner at Ashburton, are to drop out of the field for the Kaikorai Handicap, but the southerners will still come in for strong opposition in the majority of the races on the card. The combined efforts of Fiore, Classic Legend, and Beau Trie, newcomers at the meeting, should have a bearing on the result of the Grandstand Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double on Saturday. All three galloped well in training at Riccarton yesterday. Fiore and Classic Legend stayed on terms throughout 1600 metres on the No.l gra»ss and recorded 1.43 4-5, the last 800 in 50. Beau Trie recorded 1.43 2-5, Somond joined him for the last 1400 metres, and the stablemates hurried over the last 800 in 49. SHOULD IMPROVE K. Quayle has Beau Trie looking bright and solid, and on Saturday the chestnut should improve markedly on his last-start effort in the Geraldine Cup. Janny ran her last 800 m in 49 1-5 to join Silver Head, which had broken clear early. Silver Head is another newcomer at the Otago meeting, but Bev Leigh, which sprinted keenly over 600 m in 37 2-5 yesterday, appeared on the first day, being one of the failures in the D. P. Wilson Memorial, obviously tangled by a tricky track. Of the lesser lights from Riccarton booked for Wingatui none impressed more than Castle Hill. This laststart winner was going strongly, clear of Mellacious and Capello, finishing 1200 metres in 1.16 4-5, the last 800 in 50. Editorial, Red Jekyll, and Kingsgate sprinted 800 m in 49, with honours pretty well even. Red Jekyll and Editorial will be two of M. J. Skelton’s mounts on Saturday. Cossack Pride, another
newcomer at Wingatui, advanced his preparation for the Kaikorai Handicap by sprinting 800 m in 50 4-5. CLEARED OUT Boltrec, now trained by R. J. McCann, cleared out from
, Gay Debbie and Jury over ■ 800 m, run in 50 2-5. Provoke, a lightly-raced Resurgent filly in R. B. Taggart’s team, sped in from . the 800 m in 49 2-5, the last 1 600 in 36 3-5.
