NOON FORECAST

Situation: An intense anticyclone covers most of New Zealand and a cold front is advancing north-east across the South Island. Forecast: Canterbury: Light winds at first; a change to cooler moderate south-westerlies this afternoon and a period of rain; clearing again tonight. Buller, Westland: Moderate nbrtherlies; a few showers at first but more general rain spreading north during the day; moderate temperatures.

Nelson: Moderate northerlies; showers about the western ranges, fair elsewhere; moderate temperatures. Central Marlborough: Northwesterlies becoming fresh during the morning, fair and mild. Marlborough Sounds: Northerlies strong about Cook Strait but mainly moderate elsewhere; cloudy about the hills, otherwise fair; moderate temperatures. Kaikoura Coast: Moderate north-easterlies and fine until a change to cooler moderate south-westerlies and rain tonight. Outlook: Scattered showers.
