Tax allegation in Australia
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) CANBERRA, Oct. 1. The Australian Commissioner for Taxation (Sir Edward Cain) is expected to launch an immediate investigation into a report that Commonwealth tax officers are being instructed to discriminate against people with Jewish surnames. In the television current affairs programme", “This Day Tonight,” what was alleged to be a transcript of a lecture given at an in-ser-vice course for tax officers was produced, in which it was said that people with Jewish or Central European backgrounds were more likely to evade tax because of their cultural background. Trainee officers were said to have been told to investigate returns of such people more closely than anyone else. Sir Edward said last night that if any such advice or instruction had been feiven, it was without his knowledge or authority and did not reflect the department’s policy.
