National Council of Churches
Sir,—“The Walrus” has misconceptions. New Zealand individuals and churches have not contributed less to the National Council of Churches, but with increased costs they need to contribute more. The annual report states the “amount requested from member churches for . . . year ended June 30, 1974 . . . was-.contributed” and “contributions from friends and donations remain fairly constant.” Member Churches of the World Council of Churches (as distinct from N.C.C.) are the
New Zealand Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist and Churches of Christ. Most of these have, as national churches, debated and favoured aid to the Programme to Combat Racism (not, repeat not, to “terrorists”) and, being fully informed, have themselves contributed to the fund. It is because the South African Government spends $lO million for propaganda in New Zealand and other “white” countries that the N.C.C. is forced to waste manpower combating false impressions. It does not, as N.C.C., contribute to the fund.—Yours, etc., BETTY ROBERTS. August 30, 1974.
