Advertising on buses

Sir, — I trust that the Government, to which the Transport Board is now looking for financial assistance, has been informed that, to keep our buses pure red, advertising revenue to the tune of $21,000 on 11 per cent of the bus fleet is being turned down on the ground that “it would be sinful to spoil the appearance of some of our buses.” Government finances come from one source only — taxation paid by people — the same people who now cover Transport Board losses through rates. If our Transport Board were really alive to its responsibilities to patrons and to ratepayers,

every revenue-producing avenue would be explored and made use of to the full so that fares could not only be held, but reduced, resulting in more patronage for the buses. The buses may not be such a pure shade of red, but the losses could be changed from pure red to a delicate shade of pint — or even white. — Yours etc., PURE RED. August 30, 1974.
