Rural drift in China

Sir, — I would like to correct two statements attributed to me by “The Press” on August 28. I was reported as saying, in a discussion on China, that “the Chinese generally needed coupons to buy goods” and “the peasants would never give up the land, that was their livelihood, to the State.” First, the only item I observed to be subject to rationing was clothing. Second, the Chinese peasants have already given up their individual control over the land by forming large communes. The next step, State ownership of the land, is virtually inevitable, the only question being the academic question of when it will happen. — Yours etc.. P. B. MORGAN. August 30, 1974.
