“We'll win yachting trophy’
i (N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) NEWPORT (Rhode Island). “There seems little doubt we'll win the America's Cup.’’ the head of the Australian syndicate. A. Bond, told a press conference in Newport yesterday.
Bond, shortly after his 12- ] metre yacht Southern Cross had swept to a fourth successive win over France in elimination races, predicted the boat would do the same to an American defender. “It has taken us four years to get this far, and we are only one step away from taking the trophy,” hesaid.
“On behalf of the Australian people, I say we have a second-to-none chance of cup success.”
The skipper of Southern Cross, J. Hardy, while not so cock-sure, agreed that Australia had its best hope of the four challenges so far.
In the elimination race yesterday, Southern Cross finished just over half a mile and 4min 22sec ahead of France, to win the best-of-seven series.
On September 10, Southern Cross will challenge either Intrepid or Courageous.
The two American yachts are having trial races almost daily to decide which one will defend the cup. Intrepid won the latest race yesterday, with a 52sec victory over Courageous.
