Mr Tait to go to court
Mr Gordon Tait, the bookseller, has instructed his lawyer to begin court proceedings to get him into the Shop Assistants’ Union. Mr Tait believes that as an employee of Gordon Tait Booksellers, Ltd — he is the chairman and owns 99 per cent of the shares — he is obliged to join the union, but the union has refused to admit him on the grounds that he is “obviously an employer.” “By rejecting my application for membership and putting his own rules above the law, the secretary of the union (Mr B. Alderdice) has left me no alternative but to apply to the court for support in fulfilling my legal obligations,” said Mr Tait yesterday. The union has placed Ine affair in the hands of its lawyers and Mr Alderdice would not comment.
