Rugby club tour

Sir, —I am deeply concerned about the proposed visit of the South African Diggers Rugby Club in March. The Petone Rugby Football Club’s unthinking action should be deplored. The Labour Government cancelled the proposed 1973 Springbok team for the benefit of preserving New Zealand’s dignity and to show that we New Zealanders will not tolerate the injustices of South Africa’s apartheid policy. One Rugby club whose chairman admits to disregarding the political and moral results of his invitation, should not be permitted to risk placing New Zealand in another diplomatically embarrassing position by having to have the invitation cancelled for the sake of the majority in this country, who believe that apartheid is unjust and cruelly inhumane.— Yours, etc., H. LEONARD. August 27, 1974.
